Chief Joe DiBernardo: An Announcement Regarding the 2020 Seminar

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Over the last several months, the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation has been closely monitoring the Covid-19 pandemic. The health and well-being of our students, world-class instructors, and volunteers are paramount to us. We would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support for this year’s Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Seminar; the response has been outstanding! While we were hopeful that conditions would improve and that we would see all of you this November, we feel that given the current conditions we must postpone the 2020 Seminar. Please know that this decision was not made lightly, and that every possible effort was made to have a safe in-person event. We are committed to firefighter safety, just as Joey D was, and this responsibility for your well-being led us to this decision.

For those that are registered for the Seminar, you have a few options to consider:

  1. You can remain registered for the Seminar which we will have in 2021.
  2. You may request a refund for your registration.
  3. You may also choose to make a charitable donation to help the Foundation continue helping firefighters throughout North America.

Like all of you, we have been impacted by this global crisis. The Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation has been unable to hold any of our traditional fundraisers, which support our grant program. We continue to explore new ways to continue to fulfill our mission of providing life-saving training and equipment to firefighters. Thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate this crisis together.

Stay safe Brothers and Sisters. We look forward to seeing you in 2021!
Deputy Chief Joe DiBernardo, FDNY, (Ret.)
Commander Division 6 South Bronx/Harlem

The Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation is Grateful

We are living in unprecedented times. As we social distance, the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation sends its profound gratitude to all first responders, members of the armed forces, and medical professionals who are battling fiercely to keep us safe and well during these uncertain times. They have always been our heroes, and their selfless compassion for their neighbors will always be a beacon of hope and strength during times of distress.

During this global crisis, we are also grateful for the many farmers, truckers, postal/delivery, sanitation, grocery, and food service workers who continue their hard work to keep us fed and supplied with the necessary goods to fulfill our basic needs. Now more than ever, we understand and appreciate their importance in our daily lives, and we thank them.

Although we are physically isolated, our thoughts, prayers and gratitude for our many blessings and for those on the front lines of this pandemic will make a difference. Please take a moment to reflect on their service and the sacrifices their families make every day.

Manchester Fire-Rescue-EMS Recieves Grant from the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation

In late 2019, the Manchester Fire-Rescue-EMS (CT) was awarded a grant from the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation for personal safety systems (PSS) and related training. This grant, in the amount of $12,000, will provide department members with PSS and training they need to escape if there are no other ways out.

“The hazards of under-staffing have placed our firefighters in danger on many occasions. They are working inside the structure in the early stages of the incident when they are in the most potential danger. Rapidly changing fire conditions can trap firefighters with an exterior window or roof being the only exit path. A personal safety system (PSS) could prevent a tragic outcome for our firefighters in this situation,” says Chief David Billings. “Thank you for all of your efforts to prevent firefighter injuries or deaths. This is an outstanding tribute to the legacy of Joey D!”

Over the last six years, the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation grant program has awarded over $472,000 to departments in need. Established in Joey’s memory in 2013, the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation holds firefighter training events that support its grant program. It also relies on the generous support of our sponsors and partners to help train and equip firefighters.

In 2005, Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo, known to his friends and colleagues as “Joey D,” was critically injured in a Bronx apartment fire where two firefighters perished and three others were also badly injured. A personal safety rope system, carried by fellow Rescue 3 Firefighter Jeff Cool, helped both Joey and Jeff to escape the flames by lowering themselves as far as they could from the four-story jump. After the incident, Joey traveled around the country training firefighters and sharing his story to help other firefighters. His foundation will continue this work, helping firefighters in the United States and Canada.

"Thanks to everyone who has supported the Foundation and its mission to keep firefighters safe. Together we carry on Joey's legacy and work to prevent other tragedies from occurring. We’re grateful to all of our grant partners, sponsors, and donors for their generosity," says Chief Joe DiBernardo, Foundation President and Joey's father.

The Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation will continue to train firefighters and provide grants to departments to ensure the safety of firefighters across the United States and Canada. PSS Grant Awarded to the Pleasantdale Fire District by the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation

In late 2019, the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation awarded the Pleasantdale Fire District (NY) a grant for personal safety systems (PSS) and related training. This grant, in the amount of $8,340, will provide 20 department members with PSS and training they need to escape if there are no other ways out.

“The need for the systems is a requirement for the PSS law for the firefighters from New York State. Our firefighters respond mutual aid to other districts which have three story buildings. Currently, they do not have any personal safety systems to affectively complete a self - rescue from a building,” they reported in their grant application.

“Before the addition of the 10 units, we were only able to attach our current bail out kits to our SCBA harnesses on our attack engine, this ensured that all interior firefighters would have access to them in case of emergency,” notes Captain Ed Fisher. “Though they provided protection, it was not the best scenario, as the kits were not personally assigned and maintained. With the new units we have assigned all bail out kits to our interior firefighters, and they can have a piece of mind knowing their personal protection is in their hands.”
